Broken glass can be unpredictable. Keep children and pets away from the area, avoid touching the damaged pane, and do not open or close the window.
If the glass is cracked but still securely held inside the frame, leave it alone. Sweep and vacuum around the window because small pieces may have fallen even if you cannot see them.
Cracked Glass Still Inside the Frame
An Opening Through Both Panes
If both panes are broken and there is an opening through the window, heavy-duty tape may be used to temporarily cover the hole when it can be applied safely. Place the tape on the remaining glass instead of the window frame to help prevent adhesive residue.
Shattered Tempered Glass
If the tempered glass is shattered but still standing, several overlapping strips of heavy-duty tape may help hold the pieces together. Only attempt this if the glass is stable and can be reached without pressing on it or touching sharp edges.
Once moisture is trapped between the panes, it cannot be cleaned from the inside or outside of the window. The failed insulated glass unit must be replaced to restore a clear view.

Double-Pane Insulated Glass
A double-pane window is manufactured as one sealed insulated glass unit. If one or both panes break, we replace the complete glass unit with a new factory-sealed unit built to fit the existing frame.

Tempered Safety Glass
Tempered glass is commonly required in patio doors, exterior doors, and other locations where safety glass is needed. We custom order new tempered glass to fit the existing opening.

We match the Low-E coating to the existing windows to the best of our ability. An exact color match is not always possible because Low-E coatings can change in appearance as they age and deteriorate. Older products, grid styles, and glass options may also no longer be available.
Before ordering your glass, we will explain the closest available match and any options you can choose from.

Do I Need to Replace the Entire Window?
A cracked or broken pane does not always mean you need an entirely new window.

If the existing frame is solid and the window opens, closes, and locks correctly, Southern Glass Solutions can usually replace the damaged glass while keeping the existing frame, trim, and surrounding materials in place.​

A complete window replacement may be the better option when:
The frame is rotten or badly damaged
The frame is warped
The window no longer opens or closes correctly
The window will not lock properly
You are ready to upgrade the window’s appearance or performance
We will inspect the condition of the existing window and explain whether glass-only replacement or a complete window replacement makes the most sense.

How Long Does Replacement Glass Take?
Most custom insulated glass units arrive within approximately 10 to 15 business days after we take the final measurements.
Specialty-shaped glass that requires a physical pattern may take longer to manufacture. We will let you know if your window requires a pattern and provide the expected lead time before your glass is ordered.
Once your replacement glass arrives, we will contact you to schedule the installation.
